Scripture in 60: Galatians 5:24

New American Standard Bible:

Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

New Living Translation:

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.

New King James Version:

And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

New International Version:

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Amplified Bible:

And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature together with its passions and appetites.

Context:

The concluding verses of Galatians five are about living life in the Spirit of God. Verse 24 explains what belonging to Jesus does to our old self.

Observations:

Those who belong to Jesus are those who have put their faith in him. Those are the ones who have given up their former selves, along with our evil lusts, passions and desires. As the NLT puts it, we have nailed those desires to his cross and our flesh has been crucified with him.

Application:

This is a truth for all followers of Jesus. Our old selves are gone, and we are new creations (as is stated in Galatians 2:20). Therefore, we can boast in Christ that he has allowed us to crucify what we used to be on his cross, killing it forever.
