New American Standard Bible:
Do not be hasty in word or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God. For God is in heaven and you are on the earth; therefore let your words be few.
New Living Translation:
Don’t make rash promises, and don’t be hasty in bringing matters before God. After all, God is in heaven, and you are here on earth. So let your words be few.
New King James Version:
Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
For God is in heaven, and you on earth; therefore let your words be few.
New International Version:
Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.
Amplified Bible:
Do not be hasty with your mouth [speaking careless words or vows] or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter before God. For God is in heaven and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few.
Context:
In Ecclesiastes five, the wisdom writer discussed the need to humble ourselves in the presence of God. In verse two, he specifically addresses talking to God.
Observations:
As translated, this verse is dealing with being quick to make an Old Testament-style vow in the presence of God. As contemporary Christians, we should apply the same principle and not be flippant with our prayer or irreverent with our words before almighty God, who is in heaven while we are on earth.
Application:
God is the maker, knower and sustainer of all things. He is in heaven, and we are limited human beings on earth. He has given us the ability to bring anything to him in prayer, and we should do so; however, we should guard against being irreverent or displeasing to him as we approach his holy throne.
