Scripture in 60: Matthew 2:3

New American Standard Bible:

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

New Living Translation:

King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.

New King James Version:

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

New International Version:

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

Amplified Bible:

When Herod the king heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

Context:

After Jesus was born in Matthew chapter two, Magi from the east went to Jerusalem and met with Herod, king of Judea. They asked where Jesus had been born, acknowledging that he was king of the Jews. They also told him that they wanted to go worship him.

Observations:

We learn two things from verse three. First, Herod was disturbed and troubled at this news. This is likely due to him believing Jesus posed a threat to his throne.

But we also see that all Jerusalem was disturbed and troubled with Herod about the coming of Jesus.

Application:

From the beginning, Jesus has been a divisive figure, a “stumbling block” and “rock of offense,” as the prophet Isaiah wrote. We should not be surprised when the name of Jesus causes those whose eyes are spiritually blind to become disturbed and troubled.
