New American Standard Bible:
You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.
New Living Translation:
You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.
New King James Version:
You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
New International Version:
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit — fruit that will last — and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
Amplified Bible:
You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed and placed and purposefully planted you, so that you would go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit will remain and be lasting, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name [as My representative] He may give to you.
Context:
While addressing his disciples in John 15:16, Jesus talks about bearing kingdom fruit.
Observations:
He chose us, not the other way around. Not only did he choose us, he also appointed us that we should go forth and produce fruit. The fruit that we should produce is lasting, the very kingdom of God.
Since we have been commissioned by Jesus, we can ask for anything we may need in the name of the Father, and he will give it to us.
Application:
Think about the fact that Jesus chose us (you and me) to do his work. We should not delay in being about doing it.
And when you encounter situations in which you need something to accomplish his work, just ask the Father. Jesus has enabled us to do that.
