Scripture in 60: Proverbs 1:8

New American Standard Bible:

Hear, my son, your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

New Living Translation:

My child listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.

New King James Version:

My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not forsake the law of your mother.

New International Version:

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

Amplified Bible:

My son, hear the instruction of your father, and do not reject the teaching of your mother.

Context:

Proverbs is the book of divinely-inspired Solomonic wisdom, and chapter one sets the tone for the remaining 30 chapters. One of the major themes in the book is listening to the wisdom given forth by godly parents.

Observations:

The verse’s conclusion is very clear. When seeking a wise path, listen to the instruction of a caring parent. A good father gives wise instruction, and a good mother teaches with wisdom.

Application:

Everyone does not have caring parents, two parents or parents who provide wisdom; but we can all look to the heavenly Father and the instruction he has put forth in his word.
