Scripture in 60: I Corinthians 12:13

New American Standard Bible:

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

New Living Translation:

Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

New King James Version:

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

New International Version:

For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Amplified Bible:

For by one [Holy] Spirit we were all baptized into one body, [spiritually transformed—united together] whether Jews or Greeks (Gentiles), slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one [Holy] Spirit [since the same Holy Spirit fills each life].

Context:

Paul writes to the Corinthians about spiritual gifts and the working together of the body of Christ in I Corinthians 12.

Observations:

There is one Holy Spirit (or Spirit of God), and we as believers are baptized into one body of Christ.

In that day, there had been a stark difference between the practices of Jews and Greeks. Jesus came and made everyone equal. Similarly, slaves and free men were treated differently. But Jesus made everyone equal under God.

We drink of the Spirit, which comes into and fills our lives. It is part of our spiritual sustenance.

Application:

Be filled and baptized with the Holy Spirit, and look upon all peoples of the earth as made in the image of God and precious to him.
