Scripture in 60: John 8:31

NASB:

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed him, “If you continue in my word, then you are truly disciples of mine.”

NIV:

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.

Observations:

In John 8, Jesus is teaching his disciples about the truth. In verses 31 and 32, he links his teaching with truth.

He is speaking to Jews who had believed him that he was who he claimed to be, the Son of God.

He tells them that they are truly his disciples if they hold to his teaching.

This verse precedes John 8:32, in which he affirms his teaching as the truth and says the truth will set us free.

Takeaways:

Believe. It was the Jews who believed in him to whom he was speaking, a very unpopular belief for Jews in that day.

Be his disciples. He tells us how to do this — we hold to his teaching, which means to observe and act upon all of scripture.
