Scripture in 60: I Corinthians 13:1

NASB:

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

NIV:

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

Observations:

The beginning of the apostle Paul’s chapter on love in his first letter to the Corinthians establishes love as of vital importance in our Christian walk.

We can speak like angels, but if we do not have love, we are the equivalent of a noisy gong or clanging cymbal, which by themselves are mere empty instruments that don’t have a ton of substantive musical value.

Takeaways:

Speak with the tongues of men and angels. He is not saying that we should not speak the truth of the word of God.

When we do speak truth, speak it with love. In all we speak and in all we do, love is the essential ingredient.
