Scripture in 60: Deuteronomy 4:2

NASB:

“You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.”

NIV:

“Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you.”

Observations:

To begin the book of Deuteronomy, Moses gives the Israelites instructions from God and recounts the history of Israel before the end of his days.

In chapter four, he begins by telling them the importance of God’s law — what they had already recorded, what he was about to tell them and what would come after them.

We are not to add to the Bible. It stands alone as the inerrant word of God.

We are not to take away from the Bible. Every bit of it is God-breathed and sufficient.

Takeaways:

Hold to scripture as sacred, not misusing it, adding to it or subtracting from it.

Keep the commandments of the Lord. We have a lot more than the Israelites did in Deuteronomy. We must take serious care of the words of Jesus, the Old Testament and the writings of Paul and the apostles.
