NASB:
But he answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'”
NIV:
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”
Observations:
As Jesus began to be tempted by Satan in the desert, the devil tested him by imploring him to tell the stones to become bread.
Jesus responded, as he did each time he was tempted, with scripture.
We do not rely on fleshly food alone. It is important for our survival as humans, but it is less important than everlasting food.
The everlasting food we eat is the word of God — every word that comes out of the mouth of God.
Remember, all scripture is inspired by God, so all of it applies here.
Takeaways:
Be ready to answer with scripture. When tempted as Jesus was, we should have scripture hidden in our hearts ready for the moment.
Live on the bread of life. The word of God is the manual for life, without which we are nothing. Eat it in large portions every day.
