NASB:
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.
NIV:
The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.
Observations:
In chapter 40 of his book, the prophet Isaiah is extolling the greatness of God. Verse eight is his declaration about the durability and infallibility of God’s word.
He states two truths from nature — grass withers and flowers fade.
In the prior verse, he used the same analogy to describe us as people on the earth being like grass.
Here, he sets up the word of God in contrast to the withering grass and the fading flower.
Takeaways:
Things on this earth have a limited life span. Grass eventually withers. Flowers eventually fade. Our lives eventually come to an end.
Despite the restrictions of this fallen world, we have something with us that will never wither or fade away — God’s word. It teaches us truth that is timeless and promises that will be fulfilled outside of our understanding.
