NASB:
Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.
NIV:
Consider Abraham: “He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
Observations:
As the apostle Paul wrote to the Galatians about faith and the law, he reminded them that faith was an important aspect in the Old Testament as well.
The covenant changed with the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the need for works-based atonement turned into faith in God. However, Abraham was an example of pre-New Covenant faith.
In leaving his homeland, he believed God. As a result, his faithful actions were credited to him as righteousness.
Takeaways:
Believe God. This is what Abraham did, even when he could not see the ultimate result. God blessed him for it.
Understand that our faith in God is a credit, similar to a credit on a financial account. Faith leads to that eternal credit and its currency is righteousness.
