If you’re like me, you have thought the thought, “That could never happen in America,” a very dangerous thought.

Wednesday evening, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) appeared as a guest on Fox News’ “Special Report” with host Bret Baier. During the conversation, Baier asked McConnell about some of the socialist policies that the Democrat Party is currently pushing, such as the Green New Deal.

It took me a minute to gather the gravity of McConnell’s response, but when I did, I contemplated its implications for our future and what it means about where our nation currently is. Those implications are, at the very least, unsettling.

“I guarantee you, next year, what’s going to be on display across this country is a debate about whether we want to turn America into a socialist country,” McConnell said. “I never thought, by the way, that we’d be debating the virtues of socialism.”

He is referencing the 2020 presidential campaign, in which several Democrat candidates openly support socialist policies. One of the White House aspirers, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, calls himself a Democrat Socialist.

The second sentence in the McConnell quote above is the underlying issue causing his first sentence. A debate over socialism would never be taking place if the virtues of capitalism were not being brought into question.

Hordes of migrants and refugees risk their lives to try to reach the shores of the United States. Why do they do this? Because in America, anyone has the ability to aspire to do anything they want to do and live the life they want to live. That’s what a capitalistic system offers.

It’s not perfect, but where else in the world can you create your own business and help it thrive with limited government interference?

To implement socialism and disrupt the capitalist system we have would be to destroy one of the main elements that has made this country what it is — the leader of the world.

In only 242 years the United States became the most prosperous nation with the strongest military and the largest opportunity for individual advancement of any nation in history. This was achieved through many, many heroic people using their God-given abilities in ways that could only have been possible with the free-enterprise, capitalist system that prevented government burdens from incumbering them.

The lightbulbs you used today came from an idea of Thomas Edison’s that flourished courtesy of American capitalism.

The phone you may be reading this article on came from an idea of Alexander Graham Bell’s that flourished courtesy of American capitalism.

The planes you have flown on came from an idea of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s that flourished courtesy of American capitalism.

The tires of the vehicle you last rode or drove came from an idea of Charles Goodyear’s that flourished courtesy of American capitalism.

The air conditioning that you will enjoy this summer came from an idea of Willis Carrier’s that flourished courtesy of American capitalism.

The abundant choices that you will have for your dinner tonight are made possible by the American system of capitalism.

American capitalism has literally changed the world and led it into new innovations, markets, technologies and products that billions are able to enjoy.

And now, some who want to lead this nation are debating the virtue of such a system.
