NASB:
I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hades will not overpower it.
NIV:
And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hades will not overcome it.
Observations:
This is just after Peter had declared that Jesus is the Christ, son of the living God, a divinely-inspired affirmation to which Jesus replies that Peter is blessed for having it revealed by God to him.
Jesus uses Peter’s name to signify the rock. Then he tells him that he will serve as the rock upon which his church will be built.
The church that Jesus builds will not be overcome by the gates of hell. Note that he uses the term “gates.” Gates don’t move. So this implies that hell does not move, but we and his church are moving.
Takeaways:
Peter was filled with the Spirit and received a blessing from Jesus for his divinely-inspired answer. We should be so filled and inspired.
We should also know God’s church and that it is a rock that will not be shaken, even by the gates of hell.
