Scripture in 60: Ecclesiastes 11:4

NASB:

He who watches the wind will not sow and he who looks at the clouds will not reap.

NIV:

Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.

Observations:

This is a commentary on the value of work and a warning about what a lack of work will bring to our lives.

The watching of the wind and looking at the clouds are metaphors for us frivolously wasting our days. Doing so leads to no gain, no return.

Sowing and reaping is used as the contrasting metaphor showing the ultimate value and reward of work.

Takeaways:

Ecclesiastes, the laments of King Solomon, can seem depressing as he writes about the vanities of life under the sun.

However, this verse should not be taken as depressing at all. Rather, it should be an encouragement and an incentive not to spend our time watching the wind and looking at the clouds. We should instead be sowing so that we will reap a harvest.
