Tuesday was Presidents Day in the United States. It was a set-aside date established in 1885 at that time to recognize former President George Washington. It morphed into a day of honoring all of the presidents of this nation, and in 1971, it officially became known as Presidents Day.

In the 242-year history of the United States, 44 men have occupied the position of president (Grover Cleveland was elected two separate times, making him the 22nd and 24th president).

From a Hollywood actor named Ronald Reagan to the founder of the University of Virginia, Thomas Jefferson.

From Plymouth, Vermont native Calvin Coolidge to Illinois’ own Barack Obama.

From Woodrow Wilson’s Ph.D. to Jimmy Carter’s peanut farm.

From exceptional violinist John Tyler to two-time college football national champion Gerald Ford.

From a relatively obscure Missourian named Harry Truman to John Fitzgerald Kennedy of Massachusetts.

And from George Washington to Donald Trump, each man is/was unique and made a distinct impact on the office.

The Bible tells us that we should pray for those who are in authority over us.

“First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior.” (I Timothy 2:1-3 – NASB)

The king in our land is the Constitution, but as per the order of that document, we have a duly elected president. Currently, that person is President Donald John Trump, who was elected in 2016 and has held office for two years and one month.

Here is my four-part prayer for the president on this Presidents Day.

1. Well-being of him and his family

I pray that President Trump would be given wisdom and mental clarity for the upcoming decisions by almighty God and that his health would not fail him.

I pray that the Lord would strengthen President Trump and his family, particularly those working in his administration (daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner) and the First Lady, Melania.

2. A steady hand abroad

I pray that President Trump would possess wisdom in establishing relationships with leaders of nations abroad, that he would find ways to promote peace and that he would reaffirm the commitment to all citizens of the world that the United States will stand for what is right and true.

3. Domestic effectiveness

I pray that President Trump would be wise and prudent in his decision-making for matters of the economy and the well-being of the citizens of the United States; that he would be a bold leader when needed and an effective communicator with his constituents.

4. Legislative cooperation

I pray that President Trump would be able to effectively bring legislators together who are able to craft laws that would be beneficial to the well-being of the nation.

Lastly, I ask that you would join with me in praying that for the remainder of 2019, President Trump would be a vessel used of the Lord God to establish his will in the world as we await our ultimate king, Jesus, to return.
