LISTEN
NASB:
But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
NIV:
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Observations:
We are to listen to the word of God.
We are not just to listen to the word.
We are to do what the word of God says.
Listening to the word and not doing what it says is deluding ourselves.
Takeaways:
James is explaining how we are to take in the word of God.
We are certainly to listen to the word (faith comes by hearing, Romans 10:17), but we can’t just hear it.
We must also put what the word says into practice. If we do not do what it says, we are deluding (NASB) or deceiving (NIV) ourselves.
Let’s start by putting this verse into practice and taking the opportunity today to do something that the word of God says.
