Scripture in 60: Psalm 27:1

NASB:

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?

NIV:

The LORD is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?

Observations:

The Psalmist is describing what the LORD (yahweh) means to him.

He calls him his light and his salvation.

He also calls him the stronghold (or defense in the NASB) of his life.

In both cases, he makes the point that when the Lord fulfills those roles in his life, there is no person or entity to fear.

Takeaways:

The Lord is our light and our salvation, and when he is the one we depend on to light our lives and save us from peril, there is no one for us to fear.

The Lord is also our stronghold or our defense, and when he is our defender, there is no one for us to be afraid of or dread.

Instead of relying on the failing things of this world to be our security, let’s allow the Lord to be our light, our salvation, our stronghold and our defense.
