NASB:
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for he who comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.
NIV:
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Observations:
We must have faith to please God.
Without faith it is impossible to please God.
Anyone who comes to God must believe that he exists.
Anyone who comes to God must believe that he rewards those who seek him earnestly.
Takeaways:
This is in the midst of Hebrews 11, also known as the ‘Hall of Faith.’ The author is going through the instances of extreme faith in the Old Testament, and this portion comes right after he talks about Enoch’s not experiencing death being a direct result of his faith.
Our goal should be to please God, and we cannot do that without faith in him.
Everyone who wants to come to God must first believe that God exists.
But also, everyone who comes to God must understand and believe that he rewards those who seek him — and as the NIV puts it, earnestly seek him.
