Scripture in 60: Ephesians 2:9

NASB:

Not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

NIV:

Not by works, so that no one can boast.

Observations:

This is the verse immediately following Ephesians 2:8, which says we are saved by grace through faith and not from ourselves.

This verse says our salvation is not by works, so that we can’t boast.

Takeaways:

Paul is telling the Ephesians how we are saved, and after explaining that salvation is by grace and through faith, he makes it clear that our salvation is not from ourselves.

He goes further by saying it is not by our works that we are saved. This verse is to dispel any notion that we might have that we can work our way to a relationship with Christ and heaven.

He also gives the reason why we aren’t saved by works, and that is that none of us can boast. If we were saved by works, then those who have the ability to do more works would be the saved ones.

Praise the Lord, HE saved us.
